Columnista deportivo estadounidense. Smith trabajó para varios periódicos antes de que su columna "Views of Sport [Perspectivas deportivas] apareciera en el New York Herald Tribune en 1945. A partir de entonces, esta empezó a figurar en varios periódicos. En 1971 se integró a The New York Times. En sus columnas, enfocadas sobre todo en deportes de alta convocatoria, evitaba el uso de la jerga deportiva y hacía gala de su oficio literario, humor irónico y profundos conocimientos. Obtuvo el Premio Pulitzer en 1976. Sus columnas fueron recogidas en cinco volúmenes, entre los que se destacan Out of the Red [Primicias de Red] (1950) y Strawberries in the Wintertime [Fresas en invierno] (1974).
